#49 - Before you try to fix your homeschool routines...

Hey Reader,

Feature Story: Why Most Homeschool Moms Try to Push Through Burnout

I don’t know about you, but I feel a little blindsided that it’s already March.

Every year around this time I feel that subtle pressure creeping in…

“We need to finish strong.”
“We should probably push a little harder.”
“Maybe we need to cram more in before summer.”

Let me say this very clearly from experience:

Please don’t lean into that pressure.

When homeschool moms try to “push through” burnout this time of year, it usually ends the same way:

More tension. More yelling. More tears. More guilt.

I’ve done it.

Most moms have.

And it rarely creates the peaceful finish to the school year we were hoping for.

Instead, something else usually happens.

👀 The pressure builds… and the reactions start swinging.

One day you’re holding boundaries too sharply.

The next day you’re letting things slide because you’re simply too tired to fight the battle.

Back and forth.

Last week I asked a poll in the newsletter and nearly 80% of moms said they experience this EXACT pattern.

Sometimes sharp. Sometimes soft.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not crazy.

There’s actually a name for this.

It’s called oscillation.

When your nervous system is under prolonged stress, it swings between pushing harder and collapsing.

I see it all the time when I work with private coaching clients.

Which is why before we start talking about resetting routines, we need to do something else first.

A burnout reset.

So I put together something simple called the Homeschool Burnout Reset Kit.

It’s a small set of tools designed to help you understand what’s happening in your nervous system and calm the spiral before your reactions rule the show and the homeschool day runs away from you.

Inside the kit you’ll find:

The Overwhelm Trigger Map — understand why you react the way you do and catch overwhelm sooner.
The 5-Minute Nervous System Reset — calm your body in the middle of a hard homeschool moment.
Escaping Overwhelm — a short video and guide that helps make sense of why everything has felt so heavy lately.

This isn’t another system to manage.

It’s simply a place to start when things feel like too much.

👀 Because you can’t rebuild calm routines from a burnt-out nervous system.

Normally the kit is $58, but this week I’m offering it for $29.

If you want to reset before rebuilding your routines, you can start here:

Next week we’ll talk about routines that support your nervous system instead of fighting it.

But first — let’s calm the spiral.

Amanda

FROM MY DESK

Spring break is coming up for many of us, and I’ve been thinking about how different homeschool moms use that week.

Most of us treat it like a catch-up window.

We finally have breathing room, so we try to squeeze in the things we’re behind on.

More math.
More reading.
More projects.

But what if spring break became something different?

What if it was a reset point instead of a catch-up point?

Let the kids play.

Let them build forts, ride bikes, stay up a little later, and enjoy a slower rhythm for a few days.

And give yourself some breathing room too.

A quiet morning with coffee.
A walk outside.
A little time to think about what the rest of the year could feel like instead of what you need to finish.

If you grabbed the Burnout Reset Kit this week, spring break could be a beautiful time to walk through it slowly.

But even if you don’t, the idea still holds.

When moms reset first, something shifts.

You don’t come back to your homeschool frantic.

You come back a little clearer, a little calmer, and ready to build routines that actually support your family.

That’s the kind of spring reset I’m hoping you give yourself this year.

BOOK CORNER

🐟 Finding Dory: Ocean of Color — Step Into Reading
AGES 5–7

Using familiar characters, this “ready to read” book has been great for my budding reader.

My 6-year-old doesn’t know every word in this one yet, but because he already knows the story of Dory, he’s been able to sound out a lot of the words or make smart guesses from context. That familiarity really boosts his confidence.

I’d say this one is a better fit for kids finishing up kindergarten rather than just starting — but of course every child is different.

If you haven’t tried it yet, head to the library and look for books in the Step Into Reading series that use characters your child already loves. Recognizing the story makes it much easier for them to feel successful reading a book on their own.

🐇 The Annotated Alice by Lewis Carroll
AGES 10–16

My 13-year-old is still loving this one.

It’s Alice in Wonderland, but with fascinating notes sprinkled throughout the story explaining the quirky characters, the jokes, the wordplay, and where some of the ideas came from.

It also connects pieces of the story to other works of literature, poetry, real animals, and cultural references that most kids would never notice on their own. The illustrations and commentary make an old story feel surprisingly fresh.

If you have a kid who enjoys storytelling, odd humor, or fun facts tucked inside a narrative, this one is a treasure.

We checked it out from the library so many times that I finally bought him his own copy.

🐰 Rabbitology by Ilaria Demonti
AGES 5–12

My 6-year-old’s reading confidence has been growing lately, and he’s been reaching for books more and more on his own.

Right now he’s loving Rabbitology. There’s also a farm version of the series with titles like Pigology and Chickenology.

With Easter coming soon, this might be a fun one to grab from the library if you want to learn about real rabbits.

My little guy mostly studies the pictures and tries reading the big headline words here and there, but he’s clearly enjoying exploring the book at his own pace — which honestly is exactly what I want at this stage.

It’s a fun, visual way to spark curiosity about animals while early readers build confidence.
